Ready for the emissions test? Your car already knows
Here is what actually happens at an emissions test on any car built since the mid-nineties: a technician plugs a scan tool into the port under your dashboard and asks the car two questions. Is the warning lamp on? And: have you finished checking yourself? On most modern tests nobody sniffs the exhaust at all. The car has been running its own inspection continuously, for months, and the station simply asks for the results — which means you can ask for exactly the same results, from your driveway, for free, and know the outcome before you book anything.

The engine computer runs a set of self-checks called readiness monitors. Three of them run all the time, every drive: misfire, fuel system, and the general watch over sensors and wiring the standard calls "comprehensive components". The rest are pickier. The catalyst check wants the engine fully warm and held at a steady cruise. The oxygen-sensor checks want particular temperatures. The EVAP check — the one that catches loose fuel caps — is the fussiest of the lot: it likes a tank somewhere between about a quarter and three-quarters full, a car that's sat overnight, and a gentle drive, and it will happily wait days for the mood to strike.
Each check, once its conditions have come and gone enough times, files its result and marks itself done. Until then it reports still running — which the test station reads as "not ready". The car isn't saying something failed. It's saying it hasn't finished checking yet, the way an exam isn't failed while it's still being sat.

Clearing fault codes doesn't just turn the lamp off. It shreds the homework — every monitor goes back to "still running" at once. So does disconnecting the battery, which is why a car can come back from perfectly innocent electrical work suddenly "not ready". And here is the trap in full: someone with a lamp on clears the codes the night before the test, drives in with a dark dashboard, and fails anyway — not for the fault, but for arriving with a suspiciously blank exam paper. Test programmes learned that trick decades ago. A wall of unfinished monitors on an old car is the tell.
Newer cars go one further and keep permanent codes — a sealed copy of the fault that no scan tool can erase, which outs the trick even after the drive that finishes the monitors. The car deletes it itself, once its own re-checks have watched the fault stay fixed. The bay lists them separately when your car is holding any, and warns you before a clear that they'll survive it.
how the homework gets finished
The manufacturers publish official "drive cycles" for forcing the monitors through — precise choreographies of cold starts, exact speeds and timed decelerations that read like a driving-test nightmare and are genuinely difficult to perform on public roads. Ignore them. The honest version is boring: about a week of ordinary mixed driving. Some town, some motorway, a proper cold start in the morning, a tank kept roughly half full for EVAP's sake. The monitors were designed to complete themselves under normal use, because normal use is what they're monitoring.
The passing rules have a little give in them: most programmes allow one monitor still running (cars from 1996–2000 are usually allowed two), though the exact rule depends on where you live — and none of it matters if the lamp is lit, because a lamp on fails the test by itself, whatever the monitors say.

All of which turns Tuesday's dread into a thirty-second question. Plug in the adapter, press emissions readiness in the bay, and the car answers plainly: lamp off, every check done — book the test and stop worrying. A check or two still running — drive the boring week and ask again. Lamp on — read the codes, fix the actual thing, and let the monitors watch you having fixed it. The test station was never going to tell you anything the port under your dashboard wouldn't say first, and the port doesn't charge a retest fee.
