Freeze frame: the photograph your car takes at the worst moment
The instant a fault becomes serious enough to store, the engine computer does something quietly brilliant: it photographs the scene. Not with a lens — with numbers. Engine speed, road speed, coolant temperature, engine load, throttle position, intake air temperature, all captured in the same breath as the fault code itself. The standard calls it the freeze frame, and it answers the question every mechanic asks first and every fault code refuses to: what was the car actually doing when it happened?
A code names the crime. The photograph shows the crime scene. And an alarming amount of diagnosis lives in the difference.
what's in the photograph
Six readings, give or take, each earning its place. Coolant temperature is the big one — it splits every fault into "cold engine" and "warm engine", which are practically different countries. Engine speed and road speed together tell you idle from cruise from flat-out. Load and throttle say how hard the engine was working. Intake temperature catches the weather. Individually they're trivia; together they reconstruct the moment — a cold idle on a frosty morning, or a warm motorway cruise with a light foot, and those two moments break in completely different ways.

Here's where it earns its keep. Take a cylinder-one misfire — P0301, the demo car's second complaint. On its own, the code says a cylinder stumbled, twice, and that's all. Now add the photograph. Photograph one: coolant 4 °C, engine barely off idle, thirty seconds after a frosty start. That's a cold-morning stumble — condensation in the ignition, a marginal plug, the kind of thing that may never recur and deserves a re-test before it deserves parts. Photograph two: coolant 85 °C, steady motorway cruise, modest load. A warm engine misfiring under gentle, boring conditions has no excuses — that's a genuinely weak coil, injector or plug, and it will not fix itself. Same three characters on the screen; entirely different conversation at the parts counter.
one photograph, and the eraser takes it
The standard is stingy: most cars keep exactly one frame, for the first fault that asked for it. And clearing codes destroys it — same eraser stroke that wipes the codes, resets the readiness monitors and blanks the lab book. Gone means gone; there is no bin to fish it out of. This is the deleted evidence the clear button's confirmation box keeps going on about, and it's why the bay fetches the photograph automatically the moment it finds a stored code — before offering you the eraser, never after — and prints it on the copy job card so a copy survives in your notes even if the original doesn't survive your thumb.

No qualifications needed, just three questions in order. Was the engine warm? Under about 60 °C, suspect cold-start behaviour and one-offs; fully warm, take the fault at face value. Was it working hard? Idle and low load point one way, high revs and heavy load another — a fault that only appears under strain is telling you where to look. Does the moment ring a bell? 104 km/h and warm is "that motorway drive on Tuesday" — and suddenly you remember the flutter you felt and ignored.
